America has declared a former Minister of NigerDelta Affairs, Mr. Godsday Orubebe, Rivers StateGovernor-elect, Nyesom Wike, former militantcommanders, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, GovernmentEkpemupolo (Tompolo) and several otherpersons who either encouraged violence throughinciteful comments or interfered with theelectoral process during the last generalelections as persona non-grata, meaning thatthey are barred from entering the United Statesand subjected to visa sanctions.
Though the US government did not specificallyname those it intends to punish for their actionsbefore, during and after the elections, Orubebe,Wike, Tompolo, Asari-Dokubo, First LadyPatience Jonathan, Katsina State Governor,Ibrahim Shema and several other major politicalactors made national news headlines by theirheated comments and actions.
According to Greenbarge Reporters, the USAssistant Secretary of State for African Affairs,Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who disclosed this inan article captioned ‘When Nigeria decides,Nigeria wins,’ hailed Nigerians for participatingpeacefully and enthusiastically in the electoralprocess which culminated in the election ofGeneral Muhammadu Buhari of the opposition AllProgressives Congress (APC).
The Assistant Secretary of State, who was alsoone of the international observers that monitoredthe elections, noted the commitments made byPresident Goodluck Jonathan, who lost hisreelection bid and Buhari to work together inorder to ensure a peaceful and smooth transitionto the new government. She warned Nigeriansthat the next phase will be critical
